tuchkov buyan park competition

The competition brief for the project requested a design for a historic site along the Neva River in Saint Petersburg Russia.  In our proposal, we suggested a reconsideration of what constitutes a park in the historic and highly formal context of Saint Petersburg. The site was split into two, the upper level and the lower level. The ‘culture’ of the city above through to the ’nature’ of the river below. Straight lines and curves.

We re-envisioned formal as an exaggerated experience borrowed from the natural environment. The natural as a designed experience meant to heighten the qualities of nature and emphasize the ephemeral events. The two parts create something greater than the individual elements alone. Above and below come together, amplified nature meets a landscape of culture. A model for resilient city spaces. Neither one nor the other, an ambiguous fusion.
