the spiral

More than sixty terraces wind gracefully around this Hudson Yards tower leading the eye from the podium to the very top. Each face of the tower receives differing amounts of sun and the terraces themselves create unique micro-climates due to the orientation of the spiral.  Additionally, the wind conditions caused by surrounding towers result in some terraces receiving substantial winds compared to others.   Because of the complexity of the conditions, wind, solar, and structural studies played a large part in the final plant selection.  The result was a selection of both native and nonnative plantings suited to thrive in a novel environment while offering visual interest to the building’s occupants. The outdoor terraces provide tranquil spots for relaxation and social interaction, seamlessly blending nature with architecture. This project demonstrates a commitment to integrating green spaces in urban settings, enhancing the quality of life for residents and visitors while promoting environmental stewardship.  Morgan was the planting designer on this project while working at BIG Architecture.
